That’s Jazz 2A - Digging Deeper

Got improvising basics down? Go deeper while adding to your contemporary repertory.

This early-intermediate class pairs selections from Bradley Sowash’s popular That’s Jazz series (Book 2) with similar pop/jazz classics. Enjoy learning compelling educational tunes specifically designed to highlight jazz concepts. Then, solidify and apply your new creative skills to the likes of Crazy Love (Van Morrison), St. Thomas (Sonny Rollins), Theme from The Odd Couple (Neal Hefti), and Tuxedo Junction (Glenn Miller).

This class is for you if:

  • Your piano ability level is early-intermediate or above.

  • You have a basic understanding of chords and scales.

  • You’ve had some light experience with improvisation.

Time: 1:30 - 2:45 pm Eastern Show another time zone.
(A second class time may be added to limit class size.)

Feel the Spirit

Learn to play and improvise quintessential African-American spirituals, and then explore contemporary and gospel styles to create your own arrangements.

Tunes may include Down by the Riverside, Go Down Moses, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Wade in the Water (a la Ramsey Lewis) and even a few Christmas selections so you’ll be ready for the holiday season. As always, assignments include options to accommodate a range of ability levels.

This class is for you if:

  • Your piano ability level is intermediate or above.

  • You have a fundamental knowledge of chords and scales.

  • You’re a moderately experienced improviser.

Time: 1:30 - 2:45 pm Eastern (A second class time may be added to keep classes small and intimate.)
Dates: September 4, 18, October 2, 16, 30, November 13, 27, December 11.
