American PrizeNow I Can Say My Music is Prize-Winning I pleased to share the news that that I received “a special citation from the 2013 American Prize Composition Competition, in recognition of his unique skill in combining classical techniques with popular idioms.”

downbeatDownbeat Magazine I’ve been reading about my musical heroes in this magazine since I was a teen when all the rest of my buddies were reading Sports Illustrated.  Now, I’ve written a column for it.  How cool is that?  Check out my article, Developing Chord Fluency for Advancing Piano Students.

Live Improvisation (part 2) In my last newsletter, I shared a link to solo piano music that I played live for the beginning of a contemplative church service to set the mood for meditation. Here is the closing improvisation I improvised as the participants calmly and quietly filed out of the candlelit renewed by the experience.  I especially like the last half where I found myself playing repetitive patterns over changing harmonies.  One fellow told me afterwards that he felt like, “You took me on a little journey.”  Funny, that exactly how I felt watching it come out.  People think improvising musicians “make it all up” but it’s really like more of a collaborative dance between the musician and the music itself.  It’s hard to explain.

88 Creative Keys Summer Camp a Hit! I’m proud and happy to report that our first-ever piano camp focused solely on improvisation with tracks for student aged pianists, adults and music teachers was a success. I am particularly grateful to Leila Viss, my very capable business partner for bringing a set of teaching and organizing skills to the table that is quite different from mine but also for her relentless energy and enthusiasm for the whole project.  Check out our short video compilation to get an idea of what fun it is to learn this way.

ipad-revolution-book-comp-4-2The iPad Piano Studio My friend and colleague Leila Viss has just released The iPad Piano Studio, a book filled with information, ideas, insight and inspiration on integrating the iPad within every aspect of studio teaching. Besides great information, the coolest thing about this “hybrid book” is that it’s loaded with QR codes you can scan with your smart phone to link to constantly updated video links demonstrating apps and providing explanations.  Check it out here.

MTNA - Music Teachers National Association Conference 2013 1312272309MTNA 2014 I hope to see you in Chicago for “Improvisation Saturday” the day before the main Music Teachers National Association’s  annual conference begins next March in Chicago.  Co-chairs George Litterst, Leila Viss and myself have a jam packed day planned that includes experts presenting on all aspects of improvisation from history, to how to teach it, to preparing students to play in jazz and praise bands, off the bench activities and more.
